Does anyone other than me think the holiday calendar revolves more around selling candy and chocolates than the meaning of the day?
When my kids were younger I celebrated these special days with items other than candy and sweets. Valentine's day came with books and stationery and pens and paints. At Easter they were gifted with sweaters and shirts and skirts and headbands and books. I might slip in a Ghirardelli's chocolate bar or a Godiva morsel but the bulk of the booty was non-edible.
This Easter the gifts were more like a colorful explosion of textiles. Among other things a patterned, orange, spring-like skirt and a couple throw pillows were gifted.
I'm only speculating but I think these delicacies will last much longer than a delectable, melt-away, piece of chocolate. Mmm-mmm good!

Origami-mommy
I don't know how she does it because I've sat down a few times and tried it myself: that Japanese art of paper folding called origami. Seems like the directions always lead me from a lovely swan to what looks more like a wadded up ball of paper ready for the waste basket. But she is meticulous, organized, methodical and most of all patient. And I admire her.
Last year she made small paper boxes for an Easter dinner we hosted. Instead of using place markers we filled each little box with chocolates and put guests names on them. I say we but what I really mean is she. At the end of the dinner guests took home their party favors.
For Valentine's day this year she made me an origami flower instead of buying me a bouquet.
I don't have to speculate, when I got my flower my knees folded and my heart blossomed. I think that makes me an origami-mommy.

Who Wears Short Shorts?
She wears short shorts.
If you've been following this blog you know we started a number of sewing projects to keep us busy during the chilly winter months. Since this one has been languishing in the sewing basket, I got busy and finished up.
I'm only speculating but I think these red and white, striped shorts will make a statement on the 4th of July when we'll be waving old glory and enjoying the parade.
